Mary Hanna and Sancette
I caught up with Victorian Dressage Coach and well known FEI competitor Mary Hanna via telephone to see how she was getting on with her stunning new 9 YO Sandro Hit gelding Sancette and she agreed to share something of her recent experiences training with Steffen Peters.  Mary hopes to make Sancette her 4th Olympic partner working towards London 2012, although most people are focussed on the coming World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, Mary said, "I want to make sure that we have the time to work together and establish a really good relationship with enough competition experience to work on the technical elements of the Grand Prix test, plus the opportunity to put together a top international freestyle presentation.  It seems like a long way off, but really the months fly by and my focus for the next two years will be working hard with Sancette  to make sure that all aspects of our preparation is covered.

Steffen Peters has wowed the international dressage community with his well prepared performances including the 2009 World Cup Final on the amazing Ravel.  Steffen will be in Australia for EQUITANA Melbourne from the 18th-21st November, 2010 so we are all keen to receive feedback about his style and training philosophies.  I would like to thank the photographer Terri Miller for the lovely photos of Sancette.  Her web site is http://www.terrimiller.com/

Mary tells ....

Well I came for a week and have now been here for two months. The training with Steffen has been awesome, and I have totally fallen in love with Sancette my new horse.

Although he is a bit green at Grand Prix, he is only 9 year old and every day he gets stronger and better. Steffen (Olympic picture taken by Berni Saunders)  is a very positive teacher, and is able to make clear and simple explanations. There are no mysteries, and he really gives me so much in every lesson. I also love that he is very picky about my position and pays attention to every little detail.

I was a bit amazed that he suggested we compete after I had only been riding him for a couple of weeks, but Steffen believes you can learn much about your horse in a competition situation. Our first comp was a little rough around the edges, but I got so many positive things from the experience. It was nice to feel that Sancette loves to be at shows and to compete,  we faced a rather tough O level judge in Gary Rockwell, and while we only scored 62%, there were some good things and lots to work on.

Recently we had a weekend where we did two Grand Prix competitions and showed a huge improvement, with 65.3% outdoors, and 65.5% indoors. I felt a lot more in control of the situation and while there are still many improvements to be made, I was really happy with Sancette and feel that we are already making a good partnership.  It was nice to come home with a first rosette.

Now I feel ready to come back to Australia and work a little bit on my own.  At the moment I am planning an other trip for January 2011 for more lessons with Steffen and some competitions to see that we are on track.  This has been one of the most positive and enjoyable experiences I have had for a long time, and I feel it will stand me in good stead with my teaching and riding when I come home.

Be sure to visit the Statene Park web site regularly for more of Marys news and information and visit Cyberhorse Virtual Equestrian for more photos of Sancette.
